Moonauts Demo Devlog 1
Day 1:
07/01/2023
Started over again from previous idea. Still harvesting plants in space, but a simpler art style and top-down now instead.
Quicky added hoe-ing, planting and watering mechanics.
Implemented a word-less tutorial. First it prompts you to move (WASD), at which point a postbox-asteroid attaches itself to your asteroid. Going to it gives you some seeds. After you plant some, the asteroid containing your rocket arrives. You can enter it and fly around!
Day 2:
08/01/2023
Added pick up-able seeds and 4 stage-growing sprites for the plants (twirly melons?).
Added highlights so you can see which square you're interacting with.
Added seed counter in the top left.
Added several different seed variants (just hue-shifted version of the first seed for now). They're all pick up-able and go to their respective slots in your inventory. Oh yeah:
Added a simple inventory to the top left of the screen.
Day 3:

Decided to add some customization to the space character. These changes in colour and antenai carry over to your rocketship's design too!
Considered adding customisable facial features such as eyes. <-- will revisit this at a later date!

Ludum Dare 52 is ending soon!
So I decide to put together a stable build, removing several features such as the ability to fly the rocketship around (there's mostly just empty space out there right now).
I also make the starting asteroid/island bigger, so even though the only thing to do now in the game is plant seeds, you can plant a lot more than just 9, at least!
Added a tiny intro scene of the rocket crashing and release the tech demo, minute before the deadline! Phew!
Day 5:
11/01/2023
Added diagonal movement
Adjusted plant hitbox to avoid "double-harvesting" glitch
Added jetpack mechanic:
Added fuel gauage and icons to switch between "explore" and "farming" modes!
Added parts flying in different directions in the crashing intro cutscene:
(You'll have to hunt them all down!)
I'm struggling a mite with working out the direction of the game so the next dev log update might take a little longer to appear (and the game might look a little different too!)

I've started a new project file 'cos the old one was fiddly and coded really poorly for goals I have for the game now. I don't have any of the old mechanics in yet, just working on world-generation stuffs!
I've barely started but I wanted to update you all on even the small bit of progress I've made. I'm really excited about theis project!!

I've tried a few ways to generate the world including one that's windy and random.. but I think (at least for now) I'll keep it in a grid.. and I think each "island" can be a different biome too?
I took a little break from working on world gen and decided to add some more character customisations! There are like 8 extra ones now!
After mostly starting from scratch here is a list of things I've improved:
*Added diagonal movement
*Removed ship attachments
*Plants overlay the character better now
*Fixed double-harvest glitch
*Attachment parts were a slightly different coloured, fixed!
*Plants have a slight movement animation now
*Added new attachments and adjusted some of the available hues too!
*Zoom in-out buttons added

I wanted to work on spawning in objects and scenery to populate the world, but first I had to create the new assets!
After an hour or 2 I got it working and looking mostly the way I want:
Each biome has different scenery it can spawn and differing spawn rates too. Asteroid and desert mainly have rocks, plains and forest biomes have bushes and seeds!
Here's a cute mouse friend showing off his new farm! New crop types to be added in soon!
New things added:
*Added undersides to islands
*Created scenery items to populate world with
*started working making them spawn into the world
*Made movement and planting less clunky
*Biomes more defined in my head now as, asteroid, plains, forest, lava, desert and ice!
Big Update:

I've added so much today! Where to start?
I've updated the HUD with life and oxygen displays (as well as a cute picture of your character!)
Added also is an indicator for the rocket base perimeter:
Oxygen regenerates when you're within your base's shield. Oxygen depletes slowly when you're out exploring.
Also added are oxygen plants (and seeds), the ability to consume the fruit they produce (green for life, blue for oxygen)
I've re-added a togglable farming/explore mode.
You can switch between farming mode (sewing/planting/watering/harvesting) and explore mode (eating green/oxygen fruit - and eventually, combat etc..)
Other additions:
*Plants have animations and wiggle as well as blow in the wind.
*I redrew the cat ears customisation
*Player shadow re-implemented (much easier now that I don't have the jetpack in the game anymore)
(Yes I realise the "explore" icon is still a jetpack, I will change that at some point!)
*You can zoom in and out with PgUp & PgDn as well as with the mouse wheel.
Wow:
This is really starting to feel like a game now! I'll hopefully be able to have a demo version available for you guys at some point.. and I'll probably switch the dev log from the LD (test) version to the full (demo) version of the game.

Today I've been re-working how the island boundaries are worked out, and on a similar subject:
I've also added map shroud
(Also I've added a map you can view with "M" I dunno if I mentioned that yet!)
Although superfluous (I really wanted to add it anyway!)
Health bar chunks now drop off when you take damage!
Other changes:
*Oxygen plant made shorter
*Removed visual segments from healthbar
*Player can now spawn on a random starting island
*Paths can no longer spawn on the edges of the map, leading to nowhere
*Tillable dirt only spawns at rocket now, and wherever you put the base extension module
